Hypnosis - A Journey of Strange Occurrences

If youre thinking about trying self-hypnosis but youre worried about the things that can happen to you while hypnotized, let me offer you a little perspective.

Guided self- hypnosis, or hypnotherapy, is specifically structured to address a particular issue or problem. This means that the therapy, and the hypnotists language, will be focused on something specific. Most self-hypnosis recordings have a specific topic or area that theyre intended to address.

Yes, people can be led to experience things in hypnosis that seem to have no real relevance to their therapy, but it doesnt happen without prompting. Some of the common examples of physical occurrences include levitation. People have reported experiencing levitation in one arm or leg. This sort of occurrence would have to be prompted and led by the hypnotist. It doesnt just happen spontaneously during a self-hypnosis therapy session.

Catalepsy, which is the rigidity of the muscles, usually in one limb such as the arm, is another fascinating physical manifestation that can be experienced, but again, it wont come about for no reason. In one on one therapy, a hypnotist may induce it as a means of deepening the trance, or for the purpose of convincing or proving hypnosis. You wont experience arm catalepsy just from listening to a self-hypnosis CD. It has nothing to do with what is trying to be achieved. The same is true of anesthesia, which is the loss of sensation to a particular part of the body or the skins surface. It happens, but only when led.

This is not to say that spontaneous occurrences do not happen, they do, but its not the physical occurrences that happen spontaneously. For example, an experience in regression might happen spontaneously. A client might relive an experience from their past, and see and feel all the sensations and emotions as if they were living the experience all over again. But even occurrences based on memory usually require some sort of suggestion to come about.

If youre listening to a self-hypnosis CD thats intended to help you quit smoking, for example, there wont be any suggestion within that recording that will bring about a regression.

In one on one therapy, it happens. The language that the therapist is using might in fact lead a client to regression, but it would have to be led. Self-hypnosis CDs use a clean, focused language to address a specific need, and the result is safe, effective hypnotherapy.
